Get CatosTV.

One ISO for every PC. Write it to a USB stick, boot from it, and the installer does the rest.

The installer erases the whole disk you pick. Apps, files and any other system on it will be gone. Install on a PC you’re giving to the TV, or back things up first.

What’s new

  • One press on the remote or keyboard wakes the TV from sleep
  • Bluetooth remotes and controllers can wake the TV too
  • Android restarts by itself if it stops opening apps
  • Uninstalled Android apps disappear from Home right away
  1. Write the USB stick

You need a stick of 8 GB or more. Everything on it will be overwritten. Any of these will do it:

    sudo dd if=catostv-*-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress oflag=sync
  2. Boot from it

Plug the stick into the PC that goes with the TV and open its boot menu while it starts. The key is usually F12, F11 or Esc. The PC has to boot in UEFI mode. The CatosTV menu waits 10 seconds, then starts the first entry:

Install CatosTVAlmost always. The installer looks at your graphics card and picks the drivers.
…with NVIDIA graphicsForces NVIDIA’s own driver. GeForce GTX 16 / RTX 20 or newer.
…with open graphics driversUses the open-source drivers, even on an NVIDIA card.
…with safe graphicsWhen the screen stays black or garbled with the others. Fine for installing, too slow for films.
Start from this computer’s diskLeave the stick in but boot what’s already installed.
Firmware settingsOpens your PC’s UEFI setup, to change the boot order for example.
  3. Run the installer

Pick your keyboard layout, network, disk and time zone with a keyboard, mouse or game controller. The installer needs internet because it downloads the latest packages. It asks before it erases anything, and it won’t let you pick the stick it’s running from.

When it’s done, pull out the stick and restart. CatosTV opens straight to Home. There’s nothing to sign in to.

  4. Check the download (optional)

Each ISO has a .sha256 file next to it on the release page. Download both into the same folder and run:

    sha256sum -c catostv-*-x86_64.iso.sha256

It should say OK. On Windows, run Get-FileHash catostv-*-x86_64.iso in PowerShell and compare it with the number in the .sha256 file.

You don’t need this page. New versions arrive in Settings → Updates, signed, with notes on what changed. They never install while something is playing.
